Kotor Fortifications – Old Town (northern & south-western side); whc.unesco.org/pg.cfm?cid=31&id_site=125; integrated historical fortification system that protected medieval; bastions, castle, citadels, forts, gates, ramparts, towers & ancillary buildings and structures; incorporate Austrian, Byzantine, Illyrian, and Venetian military architecture; UNESCO World Heritage site; St. John Mountain top fortified during Illyrian times; in 6th Century, Emperor Justinian I reconstructed fortress; in 1420, then independent Cattaro Republic succumbed to Venetian rule & as Albania Veneta part fortifications received current structure; 2 successful Ottoman sieges followed by occupations (1538-71 & 1657-99); in 1797, fortifications passed to Habsburg Monarchy; in 1805, Kotor assigned to Napoleonic Italy; with Congress of Vienna returned to Austrian Empire; after WWI defeat, Austrians left and fortress unmanned; severe earthquakes damaged in 1979; most prominent portions include Kampana tower and citadel (13-14th Century) near where river enters bay.
