Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary – Irvin Garrish Highway/N.C. 12 (north of Duck, between Duck and Corolla); nc.audubon.org/birds-science-education/pine-island; comprises 6K acres of dunes, shrub thickets, forest, and marsh; from ocean to sound, among few remaining examples of natural animal and plant assemblages once common on northern Outer Banks; harbors great diversity animals and plants; more than 350 plant species recorded, including at least 3 rare and threatened species; 202 vertebrate species, including 7 amphibian, 17 reptile, 19 mammal, and 159 birds; 2.5-mile, self-guided nature trail through shrub thickets and forest; 2 observation platforms.
