Lewis & Clark Camp DuBois State Historic Site – 1 Lewis & Clark Trail; 618-251-5811; campdubois.com/html/history.html; served as winter camp & starting point for Lewis & Clark Expedition; founded at confluence with Rivière du Bois (Wood River) on December 12, 1803; located on east side of Mississippi River so still in US territory; important because transfer of Louisiana Purchase to France from Spain did not occur until March 9, 1804 & then from France to US on March 10, 1804; expedition returned again to camp on their return journey on September 23, 1806.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site – 413 South 8th Street; 217-492-4241; nps.gov/liho; house, purchased by Lincoln & Mary Todd Lincoln in 1844, is only home Lincoln ever owned; 12 rooms, 2 floors; during time he lived here, Lincoln elected to House of Representatives (1846) & elected President (1860); Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd Lincoln, donated to Illinois (1887) on condition would forever be well-maintained & open to public at no charge; as of 2014, only National Park Service property in Illinois; along with Lincoln Home, several other structures within 4-block area also preserved.
